Research Contributions of the Development Economics Study Program at UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta in Supporting Sustainable Economic Development

The Development Economics Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business, UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta has demonstrated outstanding research productivity by producing 281 scientific publications during the 2022–2025 period. This achievement reflects the strong commitment of the program’s faculty members to producing high-quality scholarly work that contributes to the advancement of development economics and provides research-based solutions to economic development challenges in Indonesia. The publication outputs are highly diverse, comprising 174 scientific publications in journals and proceedings, 53 ISBN-registered books, 28 intellectual property rights, and 25 articles published in mass media, indicating the program’s ability to disseminate research findings to the wider public through various scholarly communication channels.

The annual distribution of publications shows a consistent and significantly increasing productivity trend. In 2022, the program produced 56 publications, which increased substantially to 95 publications in 2023 as the peak of productivity, maintained a high level with 94 publications in 2024, and reached 35 publications by the 2025 evaluation period. This trend indicates that the program has a healthy and sustainable research ecosystem, with faculty members actively conducting research and consistently publishing their work. The significant increase in publication productivity from 2022 to 2023 reflects strengthened research capacity, adequate institutional support, and increasingly intensive research collaborations, both internally among faculty members and externally with researchers from national and international institutions.

In the fields of macroeconomics, public policy, and finance, the program focuses on research topics such as disparities and volatility in horticultural prices in Indonesia before and during the pandemic period, convergence of economic growth across regencies and municipalities in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, analysis of foreign exchange reserves, financial deepening, the impact of interest rates and inflation on exchange rate stability, green regional gross domestic product, measurement of corruption in Indonesia using fuzzy logic, economic prospects and international labor migration, investor behavior and decision-making during economic crises, determinants of investment decisions among millennials, financial literacy and financial inclusion, as well as various studies on capital markets, banking, and financial systems. These publications contribute significantly to understanding Indonesia’s macroeconomic dynamics and formulating evidence-based economic policies.

In the areas of population, health, social welfare, and poverty, the program has produced high-quality publications on child marriage and its impacts in Indonesia, determinants of unmet needs for family planning in Sleman Regency, longitudinal findings on post-traumatic stress disorder among survivors of the Indian Ocean tsunami published in top-tier international journals, analysis of factors influencing household consumption, the impact of direct cash assistance on household consumption, the effects of social safety nets on consumption patterns, studies on multidimensional poverty, determinants of rural and urban poverty, income inequality and income distribution, as well as human development and the Human Development Index. These publications provide substantial contributions to understanding demographic dynamics, public health, social welfare, and poverty alleviation strategies, forming a basis for inclusive and pro-poor development policies.

In the fields of international trade, investment, tourism, agriculture, and food security, the program has produced research on the effects of international coal and oil prices on Indonesia’s coal export demand, export competitiveness of leading commodities, determinants of foreign direct investment inflows and their impact on economic growth, tourism potential and development strategies, the impact of tourism on local economies, studies on the creative economy and creative industries, farm efficiency analysis, determinants of agricultural technology adoption, agricultural value chain analysis, rural economic empowerment, agroindustry development, food security, food price policies, and volatility in food commodity prices. These studies are highly relevant to Indonesia’s position as an agrarian and maritime country with significant potential in international trade, tourism, and national food security.

Publications in the fields of labor, entrepreneurship, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and the digital economy include analyses of factors affecting market traders’ turnover during the pandemic, determinants of MSME performance, the role of financing in MSME development, financial literacy and financial performance of MSMEs, adoption of digital technology by MSMEs, entrepreneurship development strategies, entrepreneurial characteristics and business success, the impact of minimum wages on employment absorption, unemployment analysis and job creation strategies, labor migration and its economic impacts, digital economic transformation, platform economy, e-commerce, financial technology, sharing economy, and the impact of digitalization on economic structure. These publications provide important insights into labor market dynamics, entrepreneurship development, MSME empowerment strategies as the backbone of Indonesia’s economy, and the rapidly evolving digital transformation.

In addition to journal and proceedings publications, the program has also produced 53 ISBN-registered books covering various topics such as green regional gross domestic product, two decades of fiscal decentralization in Indonesia, stock investor behavior, microcredit with digital credit assessment, ethical and halal income generation, sustainable development economics, circular economy, economic theory and analysis, research methodology in economics, applied econometrics, panel data analysis, economic statistics, public financial management, monetary economics, international economics, industrial economics, banking economics, Islamic economics, cooperative economics, and teaching materials to support the learning process. The program has also generated 28 intellectual property rights, including copyrights for books, learning modules, applications, information systems, and other scholarly works, reflecting innovation and creativity among faculty members in producing legally protected outputs. Furthermore, 25 articles published in print and online media contribute to disseminating economic knowledge to the public, covering topics such as financial technology services, foreign exchange trading, distinguishing speculation from investment, prudent investment through crowdfunding, practices in murabahah financing, and various contemporary economic issues relevant to everyday life.

This high level of research productivity demonstrates that the Development Economics Study Program at UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta excels not only in education and community service but also possesses strong research capacity. The program has established itself as a center of excellence in development economics research, contributing significantly to the advancement of knowledge, the provision of evidence-based policy recommendations, and the dissemination of economic knowledge to support sustainable, inclusive, and equitable economic development in Indonesia.
